I love biking in New York City.

If you finish high school and keep a job without having children before marriage, you will almost certainly not be poor.   Period. In 2004, the poverty rate among blacks who followed that formula was less than 6 percent, as opposed to the overall rate of 24.7 percent.

Tonight I biked from Manhattan’s Upper West Side to the Village to see jazz drummer Tyshawn Sorey’s New Quartet with John Escreet, Aaron Stewart & Taylor Ho Bynum. The ride was 70% on a dedicated bike path, 25% on bike lanes and 5% on the regular, unlabeled street. Who needs Amsterdam and Copenhagen? (The show was fantastic, too.)

Still out of town and dealing with a lot (see earlier posts below), but will be back in Rochester early next week. I hope I can get back in the swing of things after I return. I decided to go out and visit Ali at Genesee Valley Park (Hawthorn Dr.) at her kickball game with The Kickball League of Rochester. The game is relatively simple and goes by fast, so I only caught a couple innings. Ali went home but I decided to go with the team to the bar. Their pick: J. D.

We've written before about this operating mantra of our Rochester chapter of the Democratic-Media Complex.When local institutions controlled by Democrats have the authority and right to make a decision, that right is never questioned.   For example, members of the all-Democratic Brighton Town Board fill a vacancy on the Board, or for a Town Jusice, with a Democrat (and why would they do otherwise, or should they?)   Pure "dog bites man" stuff.   No story there.

…is fun! I know this isn’t news to all my NYC cycling pals, but today was my first real ride that wasn’t just on the river path. The Dahon Speed D7 performed like a champ. I rode it from my house in Albany to the bus departure point across the river, folded it for storage on the bus, then unfolded it in NYC and zipped over to my folks’ place. Fantabulous!
